Can Your Lifespan be Impacted by Hearing Loss?

Happy black people, embrace and support or trust, commitment and connection in marriage or retirement

Everyone loves the idea of a miracle cure that helps you live longer. In fact, a brief internet search will likely return thousands of such miracle remedies (if not more), each promising to help you live longer thanks to one simple trick. The healthcare community doesn’t endorse most of these alleged cures as they have no real medical foundation.

Nonetheless, that doesn’t mean that nothing you do can positively impact your longevity. Your expected lifespan can be positively influenced by quitting smoking and eating a healthy diet.

This is also true of managing hearing loss by using hearing aids. And a multidisciplinary journal that centers around healthy aging, called The Lancet Healthy Longevity, has recently released research that backs this up. So, will using hearing aids to treat hearing loss help increase longevity? There’s a strong possibility that it will according to this study.

Does hearing loss pose a threat to your health?

The connection between your hearing health and your general wellness isn’t particularly new to researchers. The fact that neglected hearing loss can significantly increase your risk of experiencing cognitive decline is well established, for instance.

Many individuals, however, are unaware of these risks. They believe that hearing loss will only affect one aspect of their lives and is a mere nuisance. But the reality is that hearing loss is more than a simple nuisance, especially when neglected.

The link between lifespan and hearing loss

In most instances, treatment for hearing loss means wearing hearing aids as much as possible. So does this mean that you can reduce your risk of early death by using hearing aids? There is a definite possibility, according to this recent research, that hearing aids can decrease your risk of early death. There is a 24% reduction in mortality risk for individuals with hearing loss who regularly use hearing aids, as reported by this study. The participants in this study, in other words, who used their hearing aids, had a tendency to live longer.

The benefits of hearing aids

Although The Lancet Healthy Longevity study strongly indicates a relationship between hearing health and longevity, it doesn’t absolutely prove that using hearing aids will help you live longer. However, it’s another piece of information to add onto what we already understand about the benefits of hearing aids.

  • Social situations can become significantly easier. This can reduce the amount of social solitude you feel, increasing your overall mental wellness.
  • Using your hearing aids can help increase cognition. This means that you (and your brain) will likely be less tired and healthier over time.
  • From enjoying tender moments with your grandchildren to taking part in a business dinner, everyday situations with friends, family, and colleagues will be easier.
  • You can prevent accidents and injuries by being more mindful of your environment.

Whenever you wear your hearing aids, you will experience these improvements to your life. For these reasons alone, hearing aids are a significant part of managing your hearing loss.

Your overall health and well-being depend heavily on healthy hearing

The more we learn about the links between hearing loss and the rest of your body, the more scientists have come to understand that your hearing is an extremely important part of your general health and wellness. Your risk of early mortality can be reduced by treating any hearing loss you may have with hearing aids.
